I was the last one to run it that day! It’s an eerie feeling to be up top all by yourself. I was the permit holder of the Arkansas group, although I’m from Louisiana.

Anyone know the specifics of the posting by Duwain Whitis at YouTube — mentioned in this article? YouTube contains multiple films about this rapid, but nothing I can identify as “Carnage at Lava Falls” or by Duwain.

Tom, you really did capture the emotion of that rapid! And having gone swimming in Sockdolager last year, I know EXACTLY what you were feeling when you got bounced out of your boat. One moment your riding the rapid, and the next moment you go airbourne without a clue as to why, and then you’re in the water! Great writing – and welcome to the Swim Club.

Back to a pounding heart and the feel of exhilarated dread when facing the whitewater! Glad you swam it successfully and really glad not to see David Perez’s name on that T-shirt design – yet!

Tom good writing, it really captures the emotions of whitewater. “…a run through Lava Falls takes about 20 seconds. I’m guessing the long slide down the tongue into the rapid takes about twenty years.” Love it!
